Every person has dreams about their future, their hopes, and their aspirations. But events sometimes conspire to rob us of our dreams. It may be an injury or wrong done to us, an illness or disappointment, or simply learning to believe more in our limitations than in our abilities and talents.
Remember Your Dream is an initiative being launched by the City of Chattanooga's Department of Education, Arts & Culture to encourage teens and children to reclaim and accomplish their dreams. It is envisioned to be a joint city/non-profit partnership, which will become an arts incubator and create original programs and performances, as well as curriculum for recreation centers for healing and workshops. Using art, music, theater, film, and special events, young people will have opportunities to overcome the obstacles placed in their path.
The Community Theater, located in Chattanooga's historical Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium, built in 1922, will be the central location for special events for Remember Your Dream. The auditorium, which is currently being renovated, will host theatrical and musical events, many of them planned and executed by students, to encourage one another to achieve their fondest aspirations.
Remember Your Dream will work in partnership with community and educational organizations to use the various arts and community artists to:
- Provide opportunities for youth in underserved areas to improve academically and see college and trade education as realistic goals after graduating from school
- Encourage youth to achieve their personal dreams
- Offer healing for those who have experienced physical, psychological and social trauma and illness
- Partner with individuals, organizations, and religious organizations to build a community resource of mentors
- Foster greater affirmation for diversity within the City of Chattanooga
